2019 മാർച്ചിലാണ് ഫയർ എന്ന ചുരുക്കപ്പെരിൽ അറിയപ്പെടുന്ന ഫൗണ്ടേഷൻ ഫോർ ഇന്റർനാഷണൽ റീഹാബിലിറ്റേഷൻ റിസേർച്ച് ആൻഡ് എംപവർമെന്റ് (Foundation for International Rehabilitation Research and Empowerment - FIRRE) രൂപം കൊള്ളുന്നത്. മുൻനിരസമൂഹത്തിൽ
ഭിന്നശേഷി പങ്കാളിത്തം ഉറപ്പു വരുത്തുകയാണ് പ്രധാന ലക്ഷ്യം. ഇതിനായി ആധുനിക സഹായ സാങ്കേതിക വിദ്യ (modern assistive technology) കേരളത്തിൽ സുപരിചിതമാക്കുന്നതിനും സാധാരണക്കാർക്ക് അന്യമായ സാങ്കേതിക വിദ്യ വില കുറച്ചു കൊണ്ടു വരാനും വേണ്ടി
നിരന്തരം പരിശ്രമിച്ചു കൊണ്ടിരിയ്ക്കുകകയാണ്. വ്യക്തികൾക്ക് അനോയോജ്യമായ വീൽചെയറുകൾ (ഇലക്ട്രിക്ക്, മാനുവൽ) കിടപ്പു രോഗികളെ മാറ്റിക്കിടത്തുവാനോ ഇരുത്തുവാനോ ഉള്ള ഉപകരണങ്ങൾ (Transfer devices), സംസാരിക്കുവാനുള്ള ഉപകരണങ്ങൾ (communication
devices) എന്നിവ ഇതിൽ പ്രധാനമാണ്.
ചക്രക്കസേരയെ ഇലക്ട്രിക്ക് സ്കൂട്ടർ ആക്കിമാറ്റുന്ന നൂതന സാങ്കേതിക വിദ്യയാണ് നിയോബോൾട്. നിയോമോഷൻ എന്ന ഇന്ത്യൻ കമ്പനി IIT ചെന്നെയിൽ വികസിപ്പിച്ചെടുത്ത ഇത് രണ്ട് ഭാഗങ്ങൾ ചേർന്നതാണ് - 1) പുറത്തുപയോഗിക്കാവുന്ന വീൽചെയർ (outdoor manual
wheelchair called Neofly) 2) മോട്ടോർ ഘടിപ്പിച്ച കറന്റ് ഉപയോഗിച്ചു ചാർജ് ചെയ്യാവുന്ന ഇലക്ട്രിക്ക് സ്കൂട്ടർ മുൻഭാഗം (electric motorized attachment called Neobolt).
സ്പൈനൽ കോഡ് ഇഞ്ചുറി (സുഷുമ്നാ ക്ഷതം) മൂലമോ മറ്റ് രോഗമോ അപകടങ്ങൾ മൂലമോ കാലുകൾക്ക് ചലന ശേഷി നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടവർക്ക് കൈകൾ ഉപയോഗിച്ച് പ്രവർത്തിപ്പിക്കാവുന്ന ചക്രക്കസേരകൾ ആണ് ഉത്തമം. ഇത്തരത്തിൽ ഉള്ളവർ ഇലക്ട്രിക്ക് വീൽചെയർ ഉപയോഗിച്ചാൽ
കൈകളുടെ ഉപയോഗം കുറയുകയും തന്മൂലം മറ്റ്‌ജീവിതശൈലി രോഗങ്ങൾക്കുള്ള റിസ്ക് കൂടുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. എങ്കിലും കൈകൾ കൊണ്ട് ദീർഘ ദൂര യാത്ര സാധ്യമല്ല. ഇതിന് പരിഹാരമാണ് വീൽചെയറിലേക്ക് ഇരുന്നു കൊണ്ട് തന്നെ സ്വയം ഘടിപ്പിക്കാവുന്ന ഇലക്ട്രിക്ക്
സ്കൂട്ടർ, നിയോബോൾട്. പുറത്തെവിടെയും ഓടിക്കാവുന്ന നിയോബോൾട് സ്വയം ബാലൻസ് ചെയ്ത് നിൽക്കുന്നതിനാൽ എവിടെയും പാർക്ക് ചെയ്ത് പോകാവുന്നതാണ്. 25 km per hour വരെ വേഗത്തിൽ പോകാവുന്ന ഈ ഉപകരണത്തിനു നിലവിൽ ഡ്രൈവിങ് ലൈസൻസ് ആവശ്യമില്ല. എങ്കിലും
സീറ്റ് ബെൽറ്റ്, ഹെൽമെറ്റ്‌ എന്നിവ ധരിക്കാനും വാഹനം ഓടിക്കുമ്പോൾ പാലിക്കേണ്ട എല്ലാ സുരക്ഷാ നിർദ്ദേശങ്ങളും പാലിക്കാനുമാണ് നിയോമോഷൻ, ഫയർ എന്ന സംഘടനകൾ നിഷ്ക്കർഷിക്കുന്നത്. നാല് വർഷങ്ങൾക്കു മുമ്പ് പ്ലാവിൽ നിന്ന് വീണ് നട്ടെല്ലിന് പരുക്ക്
പറ്റിയ സന്തോഷിന് സുഷുമ്നാ ക്ഷതം മൂലം അരയ്ക്ക് താഴേയ്ക്ക് ചലനശേഷി നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നു. എങ്കിലും തീവ്രപരിശീലനത്തിലൂടെ തന്റെ ദൈനംദിന ജീവിതത്തിൽ എല്ലാ കാര്യങ്ങളും വീൽചെയറിൽ ഇരുന്നു കൊണ്ട് സ്വയം ചെയ്യുവാൻ സന്തോഷ് ശീലിച്ചിരുന്നു. കൈകൾക്ക്
പൂർണ്ണ ശേഷി (ബലം) ഉള്ളത് കൊണ്ട് മാനുവൽ (കൈകൾ കൊണ്ട് ചലിപ്പിക്കാവുന്ന) വീൽചെയർ ആണ് ഉത്തമം. എന്നാൽ ഈ രീതിയിൽ താൻ ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരുന്ന വീൽചെയർ കൊണ്ട് യാത്ര ചെയാവുന്ന ദൂരം വളരെ പരിമിതമാണ്.

ഉപാധിയായി നിയമോഷൻ ഉപകരണങ്ങൾ നിർദ്ദേശിക്കുകയും ഇതിന്റെ സാധ്യതകൾ കമ്പനിയുമായുംസന്തോഷ്, മന്ത്രി K.രാജൻ എന്നിവരുമായി വിശദമായി ചർച്ച ചെയ്യുകയും ചെയ്തു. ഒറ്റ നോട്ടത്തിൽ തന്നെ ഇതാണ് തന്റെ സുഹൃത്തിന് നൽകേണ്ടത് എന്ന് മന്ത്രി (അന്ന് ചീഫ്
വിപ്പ്) തീരുമാനിക്കുകയും എത്ര വില വന്നാലും അത് വാങ്ങികൊടുക്കുവാൻ തയ്യാറാണെന്ന് ഫയർ ടീമിനോട് പറയുകയും ഉണ്ടായി.
പിന്നീട് വീഡിയോ കോൾ വഴി സന്തോഷിന്റെ അളവുകൾ എടുത്ത് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് പാകമായ രീതിയിൽ നിയോഫ്ലൈ (Neofly) എന്ന് പേരുള്ള light weight outdoor വീൽചെയറും നിയോബോൾട് (Neobolt) എന്ന മോട്ടോറൈസ്ഡ് സ്കൂട്ടർ attachment ഉം തയ്യാറാക്കി. നിയോമോഷൻ
കമ്പനിയുമായുള്ള നിരന്തര സഹകരണത്തോടെ ഫയർ നടത്തിയ ശ്രമങ്ങൾക്ക് അംഗീകാരമെന്നോണം രണ്ട് ഉപകരണങ്ങൾക്കും 25% വീതം ഡിസ്‌കൗണ്ട് നൽകി ഒന്നര ലക്ഷത്തോളം വില വരാവുന്ന ഇവ 89,000/- രൂപയ്ക്കാണ് കൈമാറിയത്. ഈ തുക ശ്രീ. രാജൻ തന്നെ കണ്ടെത്തു കയായിരുന്നു.
ഇനി സന്തോഷിന് ദീർഘദൂര യാത്ര ഒരു പ്രശ്നമല്ല. സ്വന്തം ബിസിനസ് ഊർജ്ജിതമാക്കാൻ സന്തോഷ് ഒരുങ്ങുന്നു.

Today, team FIRRE did something we never thought of doing.
We had the chance to meet Sunitha and Shinto. Couldn't quite give a name to what the lovely young couple have been doing for the past 5 years. Is it a shelter? A palliative care home? Or a rehabilitation centre? Taking care
of 70 abandoned, sick, blind or paralyzed!!!!!
Shinto is an autorikshaw driver. With their measly income, they were feeding, providing clean living space and making sure there's no disturbance to the neighborhood.
Even during this lockdown, they are caring for stray dogs in the small town of Thalikkulam, in Thrissur District, Kerala, India. Ms. Sally Varma, a FIRRE member and Kerala coordinator of Humane Society International (HSI) brought the plight of the couple
to our attention who are struggling to feed the dogs, once a day, at least! We couldn't do anything but help in whichever way we could.
So, team FIRRE provided rice and a big vessel to cook large amount of rice to the couple today.
Dear Sunitha and Shinto, We salute you for the commendable job you are doing! You are an inspiration to us.
But when birthdays come at a time when the whole world is suffering, we could not think of anything else but spread happiness to some special people - lovely Athira and her family. Giving groceries and medicines for Athira
and her father.

Privileged to get the opportunity to help them with groceries. Paralysed below waist, Radhakrishnan used to sell lottery tickets for a living Their house collapsed in the recent rains. Now staying in a neighbour's house, we are hopeful along with them that the efforts taken by Shihab and the good hearted neighbours, local administration and relatives will help them build a safe house for them.

FIRRE initiated the Inter Agency Group (IAG) Discussion on the Disaster Management in the setting of COVID-19. The activities are ongoing and indefinite … so far, have done the following
a. As part of *"Break the Chain"* Campaign FIRRE Team had Set up 3 Hand Washing Facility Kiosks *Within Half Kilometre Radius of Thrissur District Collectorate*, Ayyanthole for public to wash hands before Entering their work Location; before getting into public transport or after getting down, etc. The kiosks have liquid soap dispenser and running water for proper hand wash.
b. Various e-posters were designed and circulated through social media to raise awareness about prevention of COVID-19, with special considerations for persons with disabilities and their caregivers.
c. Awareness creation through Posters at grocery stores and medical stores to prevent community spread of the disease
d. As per the demands from the District Administration, various essential supplies are procured and delivered as needed for people in isolation and daily wages laborers.
We observed by arranging an awareness program on local TV channel, focusing on Down syndrome diagnosis, health surveillance at various stages and early intervention, emphasizing on the 2020 theme of “We Decide”. E-brochures were also distributed on social media towards awareness creation. soonText
Conducted special drive campaign for providing Medical Fitness Certification for procuring learners license for eligible differently abled persons with all disabilities. One hundred and twenty three persons with Locomotor and Disabilities other than Hearing Disabilities and 96 persons with hearing disabilities attended the camp on 5th and 6th March, respectively. For the first time such a camp was organized for persons with hearing impairment.
FIRRE Executives, Nirmal Kumar and Arun Kumar attended “Disaster Reduction Workshop” held at the Corporation Office, Thrissur.
Identified four appropriate candidates with different abilities who could use powered wheelchairs despite their significant physical limitations and trained them for its use to be distributed through “Pratheeksha” – a novel initiative by the Honorable District Collector of Thrissur. The wheelchairs were procured and necessary modifications were done.
Visited Swasraya Special School, Kuttur, Thrissur and interacted with students and teachers. Will be associating with them in future especially with regards to vocational training and rehabilitation and provision of AT solutions.

Assisted the organizing team and the District Administration in making the event accessible to differently abled during the “Happy Days”, Night Shopping Festival, Thrissur..
Participated in the 2nd National Annual Conference of Indian Association of Assistive Technologists on “AT in Neuro Rehab” and presented “AT in Everyday Clinical Practice”.
As part of World Disability Day Celebrations, for the first time in Thrissur, conducted Phase I program of assisting persons with disabilities to procure Learners License for driving by providing online test facilities at ground floor and arranging medical examination for driving fitness for 74 persons. This was in liaison with and coordinating different government offices, voluntary and private organizations and persons with disabilities. The Phase I was done in two parts, on December 4, 2019 and on January 24, 2020.
FIRRE members are now actively registering (over 200 persons so far) with various impairments for conducting Phase II of the special drive to enable all eligible persons with disabilities to procure valid driving license and thus enhance independence and ensure empowerment.
Class on “Assistive Technology” was taken for children with different abilities, their parents and teacher of Buds Rehabilitation Centre, Adaatt Block Panchayath in liaison with IMA Thrissur, Lions Charitable Trust, and Daya Hospital.
Participated at the Assisistive Technology Exhibition organized by NIPMR and showcased modern devices like standing motorized wheelchair and portable patient hoist.
FIRRE was at the forefront of International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction observations held at Thrissur by IAG. On 13th October 2019, a rally was conducted which was flagged off by the District Collector, and saw participation of 1600 participants from various schools, colleges, NGOs, Walker's clubs, etc. The program was sponsored by ESAF and was a great success in creating awareness and initiating sustainable programs in the area of Disaster Risk Reduction
During Kerala Floods, 2019 worked in close liaison with the district administration and was part of the Inter Agency Group (IAG). We offered special services for persons with different abilities and managed day to day activities at Ayyanthole GVHSS Flood Relief camp. We had also screened more than 500 persons at different camps in the coastal region of kodungallur.
Assisted Vimi Memorial Charitable Trust in conducting free medical camp for children with Cerebral Palsy.
For the first time, in the history of Thrissur Pooram, facilities were arranged for 23 persons with different abilities from all over Kerala to enjoy Kudamaattam at Thrissur Pooram 2019, complete with raised platform with ramp confirming to international standards, air coolers and overhead protection, accessible chemical toilets and ample water and refreshments. Awareness class on “Locally available technology to increase independence of Persons with Different Abilities” at "Punarjeevan", Ollur, a charitable organization
Arranged trip for nearly 60 persons with different abilities, at Snehatheeram Beach, along with live demo of assistive technology. This was in association with NSS wing, Govt, College Kuttanelloor and Ollur Pain and Palliative society.
Associated with NIPMR (National Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation) during the "Autism Awareness Day" celebrations held at Thekkinkadu maidan. Arranged short rest for Children with different abilities, their parents and staff of NIPMR at CMS high school, Thrissur and provided refreshments for all participants – students, parents and staff of NIPMR and all volunteers
On a regular basis, FIRRE members are assessing and assisting Persons with Disabilities in identifying and procuring the appropriate assistive technology (AT) solutions that match their needs and income. Recently, two of its members have successfully completed the Certificate course in Assistive Technology Solutions, jointly organized by NISH, NIPMR and K-DISC.
